The Elk & Bison Prairie offers a native grassland habitat common in Kentucky more than a century ago. Locate bugle…silent. I imagined a perfect place with a backdrop like the one I saw that morning. I can hear him raking and then all goes silent; did he wind me? I release the arrow and the hit sounded really good, pumpkin sounding. I range a tree, 47 yards, I need about 10 steps and I can angle an arrow into his vitals once I hit 40. Bull bugles over the top of that saddle after I hiked to it. I spent a relaxing weekend up at the cabin with my kid and parents; it was a nice little recharge before we left. Niko, me, and Lambeau with a couple ditch parrots. The area around Mammoth Lodge is known for spotting elk at sunset, but we preferred the Hayden Valley at sunrise. Elk calves are born in late May or June. Another bull pops off lower in the canyon and he bugles at him. Numerous other wildlife species also thrive in the prairie. The Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette is the epicenter of elk viewing in Pennsylvania!. Day 3 Jake and I plan on hunting together and head back into the same canyon where I had the great encounter the night before. Get to a good listening point early. You’ll find these large animals to be most active between sunrise and sunset.  If you are visiting during summer, you might want to visit the prairie just after sunrise and right before sunset. We then hear a bull bark at the idiots. I waited for mid-day thermals and did a calling sequence without much going on. I had a relaxing 45 minutes to myself and just looked up at the sky appreciating what I get to experience every year. Can’t wait for the rest! I respond with it’s a type 2 fun kind of day. First I needed to figure out a state- I’ve gone in green before to other areas and eventually figured it out, I thought this wouldn’t be much different. Your best chances of seeing elk are the hours right after sunrise or right before sunset. They blow the entire situation up, but one elk is still bugling, afternoon thermals have now taken over. We probably could’ve gotten the bull out in one load but we still had all day and I was in no rush. Load #2. He asks if we’ve ever shot anything and I told him I’ve only been on a couple hunts but have killed bulls on every one. At the trailhead a guy pulls up with a quad and a crossbow with a loaded bolt on his back…This ought to be good. Thanks for sharing Luke. Afternoon thermals had switched and were consistent, he was further below me in the canyon so I needed to side-hill and get around him to the bottom of the bowl before I approached. I reached out to a couple buddies on Bowsite and Rokslide (you know who you are), to see if I could get an idea of the lay of the land and our plans were set. I crossed a small meadow and did some light raking and he sounded off again at less than 100 yards. I had a bad, bad feeling that it was going to cost me on an elk, but I just didn’t have time to get it fixed. You can’t kill them where they’re not, so we hopped in the truck and headed to a different zone closer to buddy 3 to explore some new country. We head up above camp just to listen and do some bugling to see if anything is around.
